Being forced to run in safe mode
« on: November 04, 2010, 01:59:52 PM »
So my computer started running extremely sluggishly today. Went into task manager and then Resource Monitor only to find out my computer was running anywhere between 90-100% CPU Usage. Pulled up my anti-virus, anti-malware, Registry cleaner and anti-spyware IMMEDIATELY and found absolutely nothing with full scans on any of them. looked into CPU Usage and found about 20 iexplorer.exe processes. Must say first that I do not even have Internet Explorer on this computer. Every time I'd end said processes, more would pop up. I could not get rid of them for good! Rebooted in Safe mode and reran all cleaners and again, nothing's found. Right now I'm looking at Reg Cure's startup log and I've found this: ncxsaromew.exe I have never seen this before and can find nothing about it on the Internet while searching it. At the moment I have it disabled for startup in the registry, but don't know if it's safe to completely remove it. Any ideas? Also, anyone else have issues with a bunch of iexplorer.exe processes showing up and taking over your CPU Usage? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

OH! Also, these iexplorer.exe processes do not show up under CPU Usage if I'm booted in safe mode. Afraid to restart in normal mode and have the same issues!!!!

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. I am working under the guidance of one of the specialist of this forum so it may take a bit longer to process your logs.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

*********************************************************
I strongly recommend that you remove Ask from your computer because it;

•Promotes its toolbars on sites targeted to kids.

•Promotes its toolbars through ads that appear to be part of other companies' sites.

•Promotes its toolbars through other companies' spyware.

•Installs without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent whatsoever.

•Solicits installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link.

•Makes confusing changes to users' browsers -- increasing Ask's revenues while taking users to pages they didn't intend to visit.

See Here for more info.

If you choose to follow my recommendation then please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

AskBarDis or anything related to Ask

Then please find and delete this folder in bold (if present):
C:\Program Files\AskBarDis. or anything related to Ask.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

Must say first that I do not even have Internet Explorer on this computer.
If you have MS Windows, you have Internet Explorer. Please try this is Normal Mode
Also, there is one OTL log missing. It's called Extras.txt. Just do a search for this file and post the log.

Download the Fix IE Utility to your desktop.

Before running the utility, make sure that all your Internet Explorer windows are closed!

* Extract the contents of the .zip file to your desktop.
* Double click the Fix IE Utility button to run the tool.
* Click Run Utility
* Click OK when you see 'Re-registered all files'
* Open Internet Explorer and see how it works.

Windows 8 and Windows 10 dual boot with two SSD's

Dave::

I searched for extras.txt and it found nothing. Reran OTL to see if would bring the file up - no avail. Only gives me OTL.txt

Should I continue on to download Fix IE Utility or should I wait?

I tried to download FixIE.zip but it brings this up:
Page Not Found

We're sorry, but the page you are looking for isn't here.

Try searching for the page you are looking for or using the navigation in the header or sidebar

Source: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/downloads/Fix%20IE.zip#ixzz14XCaas00
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ended up being able to get it, had to run and international version. Ran the tool and it said that it re-registered all files. I cannot find IE anywhere on my computer, however. When I search it, it only brings up:

Change the search provider in Internet Explorer
Change autocomplete in Internet Explorer on or off
Change how web pages are displayed in tabs
Delete browsing history

Should I re-download IE?

IE seems to be running just fine. CPU Usage seems to be running anywhere between 2% - 9% consistantly, except for the occasional spike up to around 17%. Just realized, however, that I have not heard the fan run on this laptop all day today. Worried about frying the computer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Downloaded "SpeedFan 4.42" Says my Core Temp is 60 degrees Celcius / 140 degrees Farenheit. Says all 3 fans are at 0RPMs. Looks like I'm going to be buying a new fan... Blech

60 deg. C does sound a bit warm but it depends on your motherboard. You should go to the motherboard website and check their normal temps for the board. You can tell if the fans are running by putting your hand over the vents. Other than that, is everything else running ok?

and yes - everything seems to be working okay - haven't seen the CPU Usage jump past 50% since yesterday. Thank you so much!

If you right-click on My Computer, select Properties and you should see the name of your motherboard near the bottom just above the speed and the amount of RAM that you have. At least, that's what it looks like in XP.
Let's do another scan.

I'd like to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

•Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan
•Click the button.
•For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
•Check
•Click the button.
•Accept any security warnings from your browser.
•Check
•Push the Start button.
•ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
•When the scan completes, push
•Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
•Push the button.
•Push
A log file will be saved here: C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt
