Yes, there is an operating system installed.

I have placed Xp in both trays and still, nothing happens.

It is set to: Boot to floppy, then D: , then C:

      C: HDD
      D: CD-rom
      E: CD-RW

I am getting pretty frusterated, and don't know what else to do.

      Does the POST finish succesfuly?

What operating system was previously installed?

      How has this problem started?

Have you tried to boot using a boot diskette?

        The screen stays black.

Only XP has ever been installed.

Bought a P4 from my Mother who felt guilty about never  using it. When we put the system together for her, we chose a 40 gig HDD.

        Our P3 has a 80 Gig HDD.

Our intentions were to swap the:

P3's - 80 Gig to the P4 for the adults (Kitchen)
P4's - 40 Gig to the P3 for my daughters bedroom.
and the P-M on the Notebook to roam freely  ;)

I swapped everything successfully, formatted and successfully installed Xp on both units.
Succcessfully set up the Linksys Wireless G Router in my Daughters room.
Set up and installed the wireless B/G PCI adapter in the kitchen.

All 3 have excellent signal strength, all started up with no problems. All on-line.

        On the problem PC :

The original monitor was a 17", (which happened to turn PINK), so we had a couple of 15" monitors in the closet doing nothing until we buy a new monitor. I hooked up the 15" and the icons were huge, I changed the setting in the control panel's display and the colour bit setting. (don't remember to what exactly) The screen suddenly went all white, blue and green stripes.
I re-booted and the screen has been dark ever since. (Yesterday).

One Beep, Blank or Incorrect Display Video Display Circuitry.

        Try the following:

        1. Before Windows loads, press F8
        2. Choose VGA mode.

Do not choose a resolution that is beyond the monitors capabilities.

          Hi Raptor

          Thanks for replying again.

I re-booted and tapped the F8 before during and after the short beep (which I thought was POST) and Nothing on the screen.

Do you see nothing on the monitor at all? Not even the POST?

If you can not see the POST, but the computer boots normally the fault may lie with the monitor.

The beep that you hear, what does this indicate for your mainboard? If it are several beeps, it could be another hardware component.

            Absolutely nothing on the screen

After start up there is a short beep that sounds like the POST beep.

            Brought in the Kitchen Monitor....Blackness

Took good monitor back to the kitchen...works great.

I reseated the video card and memory.

              Still blackness...

I saved this on a floppy:

MS Windows XP System setup disk
Allows you to boot from a single floppy disk, partition
and format the drive and then begin the XP installation
               from CD.

              Re-booted...
              Still blackness...

Try another videocard or another slot, if it is PCI.

I have no extra video card.

                No other slot is available.
