Assuming you are using the "standard" Minecraft server available from minecraft.net (I'm also assuming you are using Beta as opposed to Classic)

you would change the values in the server.properties file; specifically, you want online-mode to be "false" and "check-names" to be false, otherwise it will be required for them to login to the minecraft.net server (I'm assuming that you want a LAN server because they haven't purchased minecraft for themselves).

If it's classic, well, I don't know. Personally, I consider classic to be more akin to a 3-d paint program for kindergarten children, but that's just me.  :-X

If you all have beta then just use the Server software available on minecraft.net.

If you get it set up, post the IP. If I have the time, I might join in.
Been waiting to try out the game's multiplayer feature

Craig (Cengbrecht on the forum here, I think) has a server that's been up for a good month now:

mc578.servercraft.co:7777

personally I stopped playing when he switched to the servercraft address. It feels much slower to me.

That and I no longer have mod powers so I can't help people that get stuck in a pit near the spawn point except to throw them some dirt and wish them luck, since the game refuses to let you put stuff down near the spawn point until you get a certain distance from it.... which you cannot do if you are stuck in a pit.

No particular time. PM me when it's up, and I'll see if I can join.

Thanks BC. Sounds cool. I'll check it out soon.

If a server doesn't have the Herobrine mod installed, it is absolutely not worth playing.  FACT.
