Try setting the power options for your hd & display to power down after a defined period of inactivity. If that suits your needs, it's an excellent alternative and should work just fine.

Are these greyed options you mention when clicking Start->Turn Off,Hibernate/Sleep and Restart?

Make sure to click "Apply". It is also worth mentioning on how you set this power options for a clearer view.

the answers are:

   1. Desktop computer with french version of windows XP Édition familiale (family edition).
   2. The buttons is unavaillable, grey colored (normally, it is yellow) and I can't click on it.
   3. I ALWAYS click on apply before clicking on ok.

Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate

Check the "Enable Hibernation" box.

BTW, I don't think you can hibernate from Welcome screen... log in to an account, then do Start -> Shut Down [hold down Shift] -> [Standby now Hibernate]

It isn't a Windows question. I tried with other OSes (BSD, 3.11, Chrome, XP, 98) and it won't work.

    Dear Fleexy,

Were you able to figure out your problem with the hibernation thing. If not I would be glad to help you.

Hey! I found the solution of this problem and I was right about that it isn't a Windows questions...
There are states in the ACPI settings and with the S1 state, hibernating isn't available.
You must set it in S3 state.
    Thanks anyway!
