Square Characters in Text
« on: August 24, 2005, 01:52:40 PM »
Hello.  This question may have already been posted in the past, but having searched for it, I found no results.

For years now I've noticed (in emails mainly) that what was originally accurate text (I'm sure), has some characters replaced with a character-sized square.  Is this due to a simple font issue?  Or perhaps some type of encoding difference between computers?  When I tried to paste an example here, the little square was gone and was replaced with a space.

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2.  Thanks in advance for any help.

What E-mail service are you using?

What E-mail client are you using?

Are these E-mails in HTML?

Thanks for replying.  I'm using my work email in Outlook 2003 (not using Exchange).  I have seen it several times and I don't remember whether they were all text or not, but this example was text (not HTML).  It's usually a quotation mark or an apostrophy or similar.

It is my work email in this case.  The provider is Plexus Systems, but I've seen it in other email providers also throughout the years.  Language is English (US).

Can you change the Character encoding in Outlook like you can in Internet Explorer under View -> Character Encoding?

I use Mozilla Thunderbird so I can't look into Outlook.

I didn't see any option for that.  The Help file also had nothing about encoding except as it pertains to security and encryption.

Oh well, not a big deal.  Just wondered if anyone knew why that happened on occasion.

Thanks.
