drive not being picked up - windows hangs
« on: August 25, 2005, 02:55:56 PM »
I have a Maxtor ATA100 card in my puter with four 160GB drives attached. The fourth drive, a recent addition (Western Digital) is empty except it has a Windows Temp Folder on it with files in it. Oddly, this WD drive is not being picked up by the card on EVERY second reboot. When it isn't picked up and I let it finsh booting it hangs at the windows spalsh screen (where the "LED" blinks across saying windows is loadng) and it hangs permanently. If I power down and reboot it picks up the drive and goes into windows fine. At the DOS level, I tried this 12 times - 6x no drive, 6x drive seen - ALWAYS in sequence!

First, how can I try relocating the windows temp folder  and why is it on that drive (I don't believe I did anything to create it there) to another drive?

Second, how can I fix the drive being picked up by the card?

I always encounter the weird ones!

Hen:

Need more info before we may give informed advice:

* What operating system is installed?

* Does the same behavior occur if you remove one of the other three drives but keep the new WD drive connected?

* What is the make and model of the computer so we may look up its specs at the manufacturer's website?

* What are the makes and models of the other hard drives? (Or tell us, at least, are they are all WD or not?)

* Does the problem still continue when you disconnect the fourth (new WD) hard drive?

* Does this still happen when you boot to Safe Mode several consecutive times?

Let us know soon,
Doc

Maybe one these will work, maybe none. You will be no worse off for trying.

1. Connect the WD drive to an on board IDE connector instead of the card.
2. If you have 80 pin IDE cables, set both drives to CS (cable select)
3. If neither of those work, try setting the WD as master and the Maxtor as slave. Or vise versa.

Many thanks for the replies. My answers, as I have them:
Win XP SP2
have not yet tried disconnecting
Clone computer - home built as it were
3 Maxtor, 1 WD
not yet tried
yes, the card scans for the drives long before you get that far - right after BIOS read

PCDoc
I will try that
Have not tried cable select
this is how they are set. When the WD had no jumper it did not get picked up at all

That is the same as setting it for single drive operation.
