Are you sure its your landline and not your network connection? You could ask your telephone provider on how to locked  long distance calls if you want but not on xp. Never heard of that.

As jason2074 has stated more clarification is required. How close to what you seek would be the following interpretation? You have a 56k modem to connect to your internet connection and you want to restrict access to the on-line internet connection via that modem with a password. So that only you or others that are given the password can use the internet. Is that what you seek? truenorth

I'm pretty sure even though he used the term landline he just wants info on securing his internet connection...

I have a modem provided by a telecommunication company (PTCL http://www.ptcl.com.pk/related_pages.php?pd_id=111&rp_id=179). As it is always connected with my PC and I cannot lock my PC because it is being used by my other family members also. Internet is only in my use. Therefore I want to make it password protected to avoid any misuse of it.

I am sorry if I cannot clarify my problem but about my Internet connection you may visit the link PTCL.

That is a DSL connection, for clarification, bundled with a PSTN (VOIP) package.

on some modems you can restrict access to only your computer by using MAC address filtering.

What is the MAC address filtering? and how can it be used?

Every computer has a MAC address. You can tell a modem to limit connectiions to only the MAC address you choose. Sort of a friendly list.

If you only have one computer this won't work.

I may be wrong here but I believe what the OP is trying to say is there is only 1 internet connected pc which is used by every one in the family. So the OP is looking for a way to ensure only 1 user (the OP) is able to use the internet and all other users are blocked.

There's enough info in my link above to set up a secure connection...

Yes that is pretty much what my earlier interpretation was (with of course the reference to the 56k modem removed). It would seem that the O/P has some choices given the desire for exclusive use of the internet by themselves.
1.Place a password on the computer that no one else can use(this however eliminates ALL use of the computer to others--not only the internet). Is probably NOT an option as others are using it. But given the intent to eliminate their online access i am wondering what for?
2.Remove the cable connection to the DSL router when the O/P is not using the computer. Or the wireless adapter if that is present.
3.Get another computer into the household for the use of others (this is effective if the desire is to limit access to the O/P's computer --not if the purpose is to limit time on the internet due to economic factors).

You'll have to get into your modem configuration and copy the VPI/VCI numbers of your existing configuration, then create a bridge (not an internet connection, what you are using is an internet connection) with the VPI/VCI numbers of the existing connection. That way you'll be able to dial-up with your computer.

I have done this on my own modem so as to attach another dd-wrt router dialing up the connection and running chilispot to it-AP mode and DHCP sharing does not suit my needs.

I could be very wrong here but given the O/P's responses so far i think a great deal of this attempt at assistance is going way over their head.truenorth
