Depends on what you want from a processor. For everyday "at home" applications you will notice no difference. The AMD will allow some future because it can run 32 bit and 64 bit software. There is currently no 64 bit available. Heat wise, there is little difference. For serious number crunching, the AMD will run circles around the P4. It has a superior FPU (floating point unit). The P4's hyper-threading is more hype than useful. It simply fools the OS into thinking there are 2 processors.  My personal preference would be the AMD.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

AMD would be better all around. Speed might favor Pentium by just a BIT, but AMD will still outperform Pentium... If you ask me, AMD was more built for gaming... So the performance, is nice.

Thanks for your help Flame. 1 more question-
even thought the 1.80 is smaller in ghz, it is still better right?

    Thanks

Well, I would say so. If there is any difference, it would probably not be noticable... For your use it seems like AMD will act better. However, becuase I am not specialized in processors, I would like for you to here the same from other members. I'm going from what they told me actually lol  (I asked them the same question once, and most everyone said AMD)

The pentium 4 has a faster cache speed while the amd has a faster bus speed which results in almost an identical speed. In my opinion, the pentium 4 is a much more stable and reliable cpu especially where I live, amd is not to available. Pricing is almost the same between the two. Intel also has better support. So it really is a toss up.

I suggest that you Google for a few reviews with benchmarks on both processors.

      ATHOMEMOM,
Although I am a avid AMD fan, the P4 is much better than the Sempron, which has a slower FSB, smaller cache and quite simply is less of a proccessor than the P4 you spoke of.

Just my opinion, such as it is ;)
