Fresh XP install. Need drivers so I can get on internet

Hi everyone,
Got a laptop from a friend and i installed xp fresh but i cant seem to find the drivers required for getting on the internet
Can anyone help with this???

Did you ever install the chipset for the specific HP motherboard? Besides not being able to get on the "internet" what other issues are you having with the computer if any?truenorth

What specific laptop and original OS did it came with?

If the version of windows you installed was not specific to HP, you need to get ALL the drivers for that particular model.

truenorth: tried finding drivers all over the place and nothing really works different when they are installed. No other issues, there is no sound but that is a hardware issue i am aware of.

jason2074: HP Pavilion dv6500 and it came with Vista home pro.

A long time ago I made the statement that :
If a laptop had Vista on it -
You nan not install XP on it.
Of course, many  proved my wrong my citing exceptions.
There is and old adage-
The exception proves the rule.

The point was that some new laptops had never been XP machines. Thus the maker never did a XP driver set for the  model.

If if has Vista, put Vista on it. It is not so bad. You can live with it.

Geek-9pm: went to the website and found this PC.

I found that there are conflicting model numbers on it. Top right of screen says dv6000. Hp label on back says dv6500 on one part and dv6605ca on another part of the label. tried getting drivers for dc6605ca from the website you attached, but there is only 1 security update one.

HP Wireless Assistant is installed and it says that Wireless LAN is disabled and that i need to go to Windows Device Manager to enable it.
Under network adapters all there is is "1394 Net Adapter" which from googling i have found is firewire.
Is the issue here some place possibly?

I dont have vista so i guess the work of free linux is my next bet. Unbuntu it is. Thanks everyone.

Ubuntu 11 should find the wireless.
An alternative is to buy a wireless USB device. These can be used even with laptops the have built-in wireless, provided the built-in is turned off.

For just making a connection to your local wireless router, they work fine, The speed is set by the internet connection. So even a wimpy wireless dongle will do. Unless your ISP gives you 100 Mbps service. Most are below 3 Mbps or less. Even a wimpy dongle does 10 Mbps.

Hp label on back says dv6500 on one part and dv6605ca

Download and install SIW then go to system summary to extract the correct information of your HP model. Use another PC to download and copy the program. Have you tried looking in this link?

Installing Unbuntu, going to create a home theater PC out of it i think. The dongle thing does sound like an option if Unbuntu doesnt work for me. Thanks for the info jason, I did install and get the correct specs. I have been to that link before and there wasnt really anything there for XP. Thanks a lot everyone.

Now the laptop wont turn on..... back to square one haha.
