    erratic mouse
    « on: March 29, 2012, 08:33:44 PM »
My mouse was acting erratic so I bought a new one - it's doing the same thing even in a new port. I use Windows XP. Thoughts?

    1) Define "erratic". Exactly what is it doing?

    2) What happens in safe mode?

Sorry for the delay - was gone for the weekend. Everything is now working however I did have a problem with the keyboard not typing last week - restarting the computer fixed that problem. So both the mouse and keyboard having issues concerns me. The computer is a Dell Pentium 2.8GHz, 512 Ram. The mouse is an optical usb. No one else has access to the computer and I use Norton Antivirus.

Yes - so far everything is working again. I am just concerned that there might be something else going on as both the mouse and keyboard had problems. Guess I'll wait and see. Thanks.

        Yep. Can't troubleshoot a non-existent problem ;)

Just just in case it happens again, since its a optical USB mouse it could be the surface that the mouse is on. If it happens again try putting it on a a non-shiny  surface and see if it makes a difference. Sometimes highly polished  surfaces play havoc with optical mice I find, here is a quote from Logitech
          Quote
"The surface on which you use the mouse plays an important role in its tracking. The optical sensor must use the pattern on the surface to track the position of the cursor. Therefore, using the mouse on a glass or otherwise see-through surface will inhibit the ability of the sensor to track the cursor. Also, if you are using the mouse on a reflective surface, such as a mirror or shiny metal desk, you may experience tracking problems. In both these situations, try using the mouse on a mouse pad or piece of paper. By using the mouse on a white sheet of paper, you can also conserve battery life. Other surfaces that have been known to cause tracking problems are: some wood grains; grooved surfaces.”

Thanks, we did try that before buying the new mouse. Surface wasn't the problem. Still don't know what caused it but can't troubleshoot unless it happens again.
