As a child I was, apparently, extremely precocious, such that when other children of my age were still babbling baby talk, I was not only fully fluent but also given to asking questions that my parents were unable to answer. I remember distinctly asking my father how it was that music came from the radio which sat on a shelf in our kitchen. He told me that inside was a complete orchestra of tiny men. I also remember dragging a chair so that I was able to climb up and peer inside the operating radio (it had a perforated back made of a kind of fibre* board) and I definitely remember the disappointment when I just saw a bunch of glowing vacuum tubes. However I later developed a lifelong interest in electronics, so maybe something good came of it.
