Annoying Problem
« on: September 24, 2005, 06:51:30 AM »
 ::)

I was downloading stuff from the net happily this afternoon, and a 'low disk space' prompt appeared (This happened on my C drive.). Heeding the advice, i proceeded to cut and paste my junk files to my external usb hard disk.

Now when i returned to verify the final available disk space, it only showed 400 mb free. And I'm very positive that i've cut & pasted at least 4GB of junk files to other places.

I immediately went for the disk cleanup option, but to no avail. Deleting the .tmp files were redundant. (My search function reveals none at all in the first place.  :-/) I sat like an idiot in front of the screen for 10 mins, at a loss of what to do.

That's not all. My 400 mb free space decreased by 30 mb every 8 mins, even though i'm only downloading a document @ 0.5kb/s.

To summarize my problem...

1: Whats wrong with my screwed C drive? I seemed to be missing a few GB of precious free space.

2: My free space decreases at an alarming rate, even though when I'm downloading at a slow speed. *censored*?  ???

I would appreciate if any kind soul could stand out to help me.  :-/

While you were "happily downloading off the net" you probably got a trojan/spyware thing for free and it is what is consuming your hard drive space. Do you use any sort of protection to prevent this?

Nope.

Any recommended remedies? My spyware S&D revealed nothing on the list.  ???

Spybot S&D is a very inefficient program. Too outdated.

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Trend Micro Housecall
-- Online anti virus scanner.

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

Firewalls
Use both a hardware and software firewall.
Be advised as dual software firewalls may cause problems

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker.

Uhm, out of the entire list you only installed one program?

Why don't you try the Trend online scanner as well as Raptor's other suggestions.
