Service packs for windows xp home
    « on: September 09, 2012, 03:35:10 PM »
At least 10 years ago I purchased a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP home installed.  I have performed a clean re installation using the installation disk provided at that time.  It unfortunately has no service packs included on the installation disk;   no sp1, sp1a, sp2 nor sp3.  I have a copy of sp2 from an xp pro installation disk but it will not allow a good install without sp1 or sp1a.  I would like to get a stand-alone copy of sp1, or sp1a so that I may be able to enjoy later versions of internet explorer (I have ie6, I would like ie8.)  YouTube is unavailable without later versions of internet explorer.

I have tried the usual channels without success.  Microsoft no longer provided service packs for windows xp.

I have tried to install ubuntu, but no success there either.  (I wonder why, because I had success on other machines without a problem, but this is another issue altogether)

I want a stand alone copy (or working application) to install the service packs without having to go on line and downloading "their version".

I am apalled at the many junk programs many web sites want to load one's machine, just to solve your problem, which probably won't solve that problem anyway.

    Thanks for reading.

I recently went thru this on an older PC i was fixing for a friend...spent 1/2 day trying to find SP1 to no avail....
MS should be shot for this...but i'll let that gripe go for now.

I wound up tracking down an XP CD with SP1 included and fixed it from there...may be your only choice,

If your still unable to find SP1, I could probably track down a copy on my one archive external and post it up for download. At my last job I kept copies of all needed service packs for Windows 2000 Pro/Server and XP Home & Pro to bring systems forward without eating into network bandwidth to the www which was slow. Microsoft also had an option to receive service packs on CD by mail and I think I might also have the CDs. These days I use a slipstream SP3 for XP rebuilds

Today I again tried to install sp2 (no sp1 or sp1a) and again the computer went into gork mode; it would not stay on, it would not accept any input, the screen would come on and go off about every 5 seconds per cycle.  So Again I re-installed the original xp home system, and again we have a functional, but not fully functional, computer.  We have ie 6 which many web sites abhor, and we are fortunately able to operate my ham radio transceiver on psk with full control of the transceiver.  Also I can get on eham.com to look up ham calls, and can network with the other computers in the house.  Can't use youtube, google earth, etc.  TG I have more modern machines in the house which allow me to enjoy music; just want to have it all on all machines.  Thanks to all who gave me their opinions.  it must be that sp1 does not exist as a stand-alone file, only in the distant memory on microsoft's un-attainable servers.
Planned obsolescence is their goal.  I still write programs in line number basic, just for nostalgia.

Have you tried simply going to Microsoft Updates?

OK well I had to ask.

Did at least install the recommended updates from Microsoft Update?
            (Not Drivers)

Maybe you have to go there twice, once to get SP1a or SP2 and then revisit to get SP3?

I would take David up on his offer above...a file sharing site could be used.

            Hi

This is very strange as with winxp you should be able to install service packs starting with sp2 regardless of the original service pack.
When you try to update from Microsoft what error do you get ?.

As windows update service may not be running.

Windows xp sp2 is available from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28
it's a good idea to keep these downloads saved somewhere safe .

That's the crux of the issue...SP2 will NOT install without SP1 present...
SP1 is NOT available anymore from any MS site...

As i stated above i recently went thru all this to no avail.

He needs to find an original XP w/SP1 CD and either do a Repair or Fresh install in order to move forward.

As i suggested above to others you are more than welcome to try this on your own...you'll find out what i did after a full day at it.

            ...
I found that out, too.  Wish I hadn't deleted the SP1 download.

Maybe SP2 is now a roll up of SP1 + SP2 the Microsoft website does say that you can start with either 1a or 2.

I know they did that with windows 2000, SP4 was a roll up of 1,2,3 and whatever additions were added to form SP4.

Not doubting what you're saying Patio.
