Thoughts about reviving this Toshiba Satellite L355 laptop?
« on: January 11, 2013, 05:22:47 AM »
It's got a bad mboard that I can get on ebay here.
  US $69.64
+US $17.56 shipping
___________
       $87.20

Specs and reviews are here
I don't really need it for running Folding @ Home for our Computer Hope team because of the single core Intel Celeron 900 / 2.2 GHz CPU, but It's going in the garbage can otherwise. It's in excellent condition and was rarely used by a friend of mine who I supplied with a replacement PC last year. It would make a F@H contribution until I can hopefully find a buyer to adopt it.
I don't have much $ but if I can sell it for ~$200, which is $50 lower than the cheapest going rate for this model used on Amazon, then maybe it's worth fixing.
Should I repair it or trash it?
Thanks for any suggestions!  :)
Mike

Laptops aren't worth repairing anymore when you can get refurbished one for under $200.  You can also get an "off-lease" one for about the same.  http://www.dellauction.com

I may not be the best person to advise you on your objective of selling this computer. Simply because i would NEVER pay that much for a used computer (especially one that is not working). I own many computers and over 80% of them were purchased from non traditional sources and rarely reached even the $20.00 mark. Obviously there are others that do as a myriad of on-line sources offer used/refurbished/etc computers at substantially higher prices --so i assume some get sold. You were given what i thought was excellent advice re parts acquisition on another of your posts. I did note your disadvantage because of your geography to make use of that suggestion but in the event that you do occasionally travel out of your locality you could take advantage of that to try and find much less expensive parts than traditionally offered on sites like E-bay. My opinion for what it is worth, truenorth

Selling a used laptop can be a long long drawn out process...

OK, I'm convinced. No $ will be spent on this one. It won't really go in the trash yet. It's got a good HD and 3Gb DDR2 RAM so I'll put it in my spare parts pile to save for future parts use - or as a paper weight lol.
Yes truenorth, regarding my other post, I received excellent help! And the $ I spent, (against solid advice to the contrary) was indeed too much for the machine, but I really want that machine to work again - (I guess I have a soft heart for that old PC since I owned one like it years ago).
Thanks to all 3 of you for your valuable help!!!  :)
