RYZOM - Open Source MMORPG
« on: July 10, 2013, 03:21:07 PM »
Anyone have any experience with this game Ryzom to share any info on editing it etc?

Was looking online for an open source game similar to World of Warcraft (which is not open source) to play around with and alter to my likings etc, and I downloaded all content online.

I haven't gone through the process to making it all run yet, but figured I'd post here in case anyone has any tips on this if they have played with it before or altered it before etc. From what I downloaded it looks like I have everything needed to alter it any way that I want, although I doubt that they gave the map editor tools for free so the maps  ( landscapes etc ) may have to remain the same with the only ability of alteration being quests added, removed, or altered, and game statistic alterations, and ability to add objects NPC's, Buildings, etc to x, y, z and rotation coordinates etc through database alterations.

Only map editing I have ever done was with Torchlight, and Unreal Tournament 99. With UT99 being the most complicated to work with yet and probably the closest to the world environment game engine that makes this game operate.

Video footage on youtube shows that the game appears unfinished. Such as when running around you do not hear your characters feet stomping on the ground etc, and some things that should have audio are lacking it such as interactions with NPC's etc. Even if I had them all say "Hello" or "Can I help you?" when I click on them might be some improvement to the original game. Instead they have dialog boxes that pop up with text without audio.

Yet the game has features that are cool such as AI that makes animals act like real animals vs animals in World of Warcraft that stick to a "patrol" like motion always wandering in a given boxlike space and never leaving its box even when its after you.  If you run far enough away it will run back and evade attacks until it resets its position to its operating boundary of digital existance.
Here is more info on this game and its history of how it became open source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryzom

I am an expert of MMO games, but nothing about game programming. However, in the web there are several titles open source from which to draw.

    For example:

    http://sourceforge.net/directory/games/mmorpg/os:windows/freshness:recently-updated/
    http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-world-an-open-source-mmorpg

Try searching on Google, you will find many sites of this kind.
