    Desktop won't turn on anymore?
    « on: October 14, 2013, 09:05:55 AM »
    Hi all,

A while back my computer started freezing regularly and required a restart. I put it down to a loose connection somewhere, but now it won't turn on at all after wiggling wires around, no fans or noises of any sort, only a light on the motherboard turns on. The only things I can think of doing are replacing the lithium battery and the power supply, but I don't really know anything about troubleshooting and don't want to buy a new one if it won't fix the problem.

    Setup is:
    ms7681 (ver2.0)
    hd5770
    4 x corsair xms3
    corsair tx650
    i7 2600k (I think, although it wasn't overclocked)

Thanks in advance for any help  :)

    Hi,

    Check with another PSU.

The battery would not prevent the fans from spinning. You should try another power supply as suggested above.

    More in formation is needed.
Before busing anything, there are a number of diagnostic steps can be used.

    From CH library:

    Basic computer troubleshooting

Also, failure of RAM can stop a desktop cold. When RAM is not present, fan should run and beeps should be hears.

More information is not needed I don't care if the system doesn't have ANY ram - the fan will still spin.

Basic POST will still start even without any RAM. The only thing I've EVER seen that causes NO power response is a PSU fault. That and a power button fault (althought those are crazy extrenely rare! Like 1 in 10,000,000 :) ).

PSUs aren't too expensive, but if you really wanted to test it, you could remove the PSU from all other components and short the power button leads. If nothing happens, then you have a bad PSU for sure. If the PSU starts to spin up, then other troubleshooting could be done.

Although I do agree with Allan and PCdoc. I'd put it at about 95% likely that it's a bad PSU... Maybe more.

The only suggestion I suggest you try is to replace the power supply

OP, Did you remove the RAM?
Do the fans spin without the RAM?

No, power switch woes are more often.

ummm well sorry. Can be processor or the power switch too like kyle and geek said.

For the topic starter : Better would be to take out the mobo and  place it in an isolated place. Try to turn on with Psu. Don't connect any other thing. not even RAM.

      Right.
The procedure above reduces the likelihood of some things. A bad RAM, hard drive, USB device,  DVD-Drive or floppy can stop a system cold .Even a broken  mounting post.
