    Advice on My Build
    « on: August 23, 2014, 08:21:59 AM »
Hello, I'm building a pc and would like a second opinion on my specs.  My price range is about what this build costs and I'm probably at my max (stats-wise) unless a small upgrade would be a good investment.  My main intention is to future-proof this thing for a while since I don't plan on trying to play every latest game on ultra settings or constantly overclocking/changing my build. I'll just be playing games casually but frequently. (i.e. Could I play the newest game in 3 years with decent framerate at med/high settings?)

I'm going with AMD because I want the extra cores.

    Processor: AMD FX X8 8350 Soket AM3+ 4GHz 16MB Cache 125W 32nm
    Motherboard: 990FXA-GD80 AM3+ AMD 990FX/SB950 DDR3 2133MHz (O.C.) SATA 3.0 USB 3.0
    Graphics: Asus R9 290X DirectCU II O.C. 4GB GDDR5 512Bit AMD Radeon DX11.2
    RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Vengeance Pro DDR3 1866MHz CL9 Ram
    Power Supply: COOLER MASTER G750M 80PLUS 750W
    HDD: Seagate 3.5" 2TB Barracuda Sata 3.0 64MB Cache 7200Rpm Harddisk

    and maybe an SSD.

Any comments are welcome and thanks for reading :)

EDIT: I don't need exact prices and such, just if the hardwares are a good choice because Im doing everything at one store here.

Coolermaster PSUs can be a bit hit-or-miss, you would be best to go with a better brbrand such as Corsair, XFX, Seasonic, EVGA, SuperFlower, Antec.etc.

As far as AMD, if you are gaming you are still better of with Intel regardless of the number of cores. While the AMD CPU has 8 cores, they are significantly slower than on an Intel chip. Most tasks such as gaming benefit much more from fewer, faster cores over lots of slower cores.

AMD is fine for the video card though, just bear in mind that AMD's video cards don't work that great with Linux.

Also,.definitely get an SSD, both Crucial or Samsung make great SSDs.

Thanks for the info, that is quite helpful.  What if I switched out for

Power Supply: Corsair CX-750M 80 Plus Bronze 750W
      Processor: Intel Core i5 4690K Socket 1150 3.5GHz 6MB Cache 22nm
      Motherboard: Z97 GAMING 5 Intel Z97 Soket 1150 DDR3 3200MHz(O.C.) DVI&DP (there are so many Z97 choices I just one I don't know the best one)

I've also added a samsung 120 gb SSD in addition to the normal HDD

Looks good, only change would be the motherboard to a better brand such as Gigabyte or ASUS, MSI is more of a lower end brand, as is ASRock.

Thanks again for the help! I opted for Gigabyte's GA-Z97x Gaming 5 3200mhz as the color matches my GPU :)

Looking forward to the result this weekend
