XP will not enter standby or hibernate
« on: November 03, 2005, 04:38:10 PM »
Whenever I try to go into standby, I get the 'preparing to standby' screen, then it goes black and just stays there, totally frozen.  I have to do a hard reset every time.  Hibernate is slightly different, that freezes on the 'preparing to hibernate' screen.

I am on XP SP2 (though it made no difference when I reverted to SP1), P4 2.8, 1 Gb RAM, 40 GB HDD, Compaq Presario 2500 series laptop.

I still get the same issue with NO devices attached to any USB ports.  I have no deeply controversial software running on my system that I didn't have months ago when everything was peachy, not even a flashy 3D screensaver.  I have a nasty suspicion this is a BIOS issue but cannot be sure.

Any advice at all (apart from don't buy Compaq) would be greatly appreciated!

Have you got any support from Compaq at all? Is this a known issue on a google search? Is there an updated BIOS for that machine? Some have also had problems with BIOS updates!

It looks like some have had problems, although some Linux users have gotten it functioning.

The advice worked.  Whether you are brilliant or not is not for me to say.  But thanks :P
