Can not upgrade hard drive on windows 10.
« on: September 06, 2015, 12:00:46 AM »
About two weeks ago I upgraded a Windows 7 install to Windows 10.  The Windows 7 install was a 64 bit version that I had used  before. I was act titivated properly. But one problem I did not anticipate. I did the upgrade to Windows 10 while the Windows 7 was on a 80 GB hard drive. I meant to use one of my 500 GB drives.

Anyway, I am now stuck. The computer does not have a easy way to put two drives in the box. Vert little room. And there is only one SATA port.

Well, I just learned that doing a disc clone does not work with Windows 10.

So my question is, What do I do now?  :'(

I have trouble believing that a disc clone won't work with Win 10.  I haven't tried in personally but haven't seen any reports anywhere on the forums I hang out on that a Win 10 disc can't be cloned.

If you can't do a clone, try making a system image of the smaller drive and then restoring it to the larger drive.

strollin, Thanks. I am going to try that now. This small desktop makes it  hard  to swap hard drives, so it will take awhile to try it. I will report back later.

You can clone a HDD to an external enclosure...you should have one...you just can't boot it from external.

Did it! Took hours!
Had to find a good free backup software that would work right.
At last I used Macrium Reflect and it did the job, but the way I though it would.
I made an image of the small drive and did can restored it to the larger drive. I keep the size the same. Fix that later, if needed.

Some forums report you lose the activation.  But mine is valid.
This question  is not the TR version of Win 10, but the real end of July version for update from 7 or 8.

Now I can go to bed. (It is after 10 PM here in California.)
