Why will Apple use AMD chips in new designs?
« on: March 05, 2017, 01:44:28 AM »
What do you think?
Sometime ago Apple went with Intel CPUs.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple's_transition_to_Intel_processors
Surely you already know that Apple will announce some new hardware with AMD instead of Intel inside. Here is a link from last year:
https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/233389-report-apple-planning-major-macbook-pro-refresh-with-amd-polaris-gpus-touchid-and-oled-function-keys

And you know that iPhones are built around ARM chips. Why? Low power.Think about that. Nobody wants  a five pound phone in his pocket.

And now for some, the switch to AMD might be  a surprise.  :o
Is AMD cheaper?
Better design?
Faster?
More reliable?
Actually, it is mop than the above. Here's a repot you should read;

Yet, the story isn’t really about sheer performance but that AMD’s new chip line delivers stunning performance per watt compared to Intel’s i7. And that’s where this gets interesting for Apple. You see, for more than a half a decade now Apple’s design philosophy for devices has shifted to being more about economy of energy consumption over maximum performance.
This is where there seems to be better alignment. AMD’s new chip is extremely Apple-esque.
Do you agree?   :)

All of these articles are complete nonsense based on no actual information from Apple, it's purely to drive traffic to those "news" websites.  You get the exact same things after any company releases a decent product.  Intel release a decent mobile chip, you get articles claiming Apple may move to Intel on mobile.  AMD release a good chip, you get claims Apple will move to them.  Some new tech from ARM comes out, you get nonsense claiming Apple will move their laptops over to using ARM chips.

Are all of these scenarios possible?  Yes they are.  Are any of the articles discussing them or making them out to be something Apple is actually considering based on actual fact?  No they aren't.

    Read from somewhere

Intel’s GPUs only support three display streams in total. Given that a single 5K monitor requires two of them, that would mean all of them would be used driving the internal display plus one 5K monitor. AMD GPUs, in contrast, support six streams. This allows 15-inch MacBook Pro models to use four of them to drive two 5K monitors, a fifth to drive the internal display and still have one left over (which could drive an additional 4K display).
