Severe virus problem
« on: December 08, 2005, 05:09:55 PM »
Help!  I'm running Windows XP Pro. Have a virus that has set my desktop background with a black box on a blue background. In the box a message says "Spyware Infection" underneath is some blurb about windows etc.
I can't change the background either from "properties" or from clicking on one of my pictures and setting as a background all this seems to have been turned off PLUS I can't even do a roll-back ( clever ba^£*#ds).  I've run AVG FREE and picked up several trojans (see below)
startpage.vm
PSW.LDpinch.SI
Proxy.ATC
clicker.AKW
Downloader.generic.KSH
Clicker.AKW  (repeat)
Proxy.ATC (repeat)
I clean up these with AVG and in  the morning they're back!  When I fire up explorer I get taken to some spoof anti virus/spyware page and that's when all this crap gets downloaded.  I managed to find that culprit and remove it and I changed my start page back to where I wanted to go but I'm stuck on this background and stopping the re-infestation.  Can anyone help please?

These are NOT being cleaned up, or they wouldn't come back. Go to the virus section and download the spyware/adware/trojan freeware and do them and AVG in safe mode witht system restore off.

If possible, would you please tell us how you acquired this virus, it's official name, and the URL of the spoof antivirus/spyware page that did the damage?

This is informational only, but it may save someone else from the same mistakes.

Take a look at the FREEWARE page and use the Anti-Trojan programs. (I use AVG Free Home Edition too and it is usually excellent.)

At the top of the page (scroll up) you'll find an on-line scanner.

I added the Google Search bar to IE to stop pop-ups and made sure that these two entries are dealt with...

In IE, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, & under "Navigation" Uncheck:

"Activate install on demand" [Other] , and, "Activate install on demand" [Internet Explorer]
