format the hard drive?

I'm unable to format my hard drive. A msg comes up saying that my volume needs to be dismounted first, but when I try...it's unable to lock the drive. Is there a command I can use to fix this???

You can't format the boot drive while you're running off of it!  Boot from a floppy, then you can format the hard disk, if that's what you're trying to do.
