Windows crashes for unknown reasons
« on: January 28, 2006, 06:31:26 PM »
I'm not sure why, but everytime i start Microsoft Word or Outlook, the screen shows a BSOD for a split second and the computer reboots. Occasionally, it just reboots for no reason(e.g. when im checking my Yahoo mail). Other than that, all other MS Office applications (e.g. Excel, Access) work perfectly fine.

Anyone can help?

I'm using Microsoft Office 2003, WinXP Pro no SP2, and its a Pentium 3 processor with 256mb ram.

P.S. : I can open word documents in WordPad with no problem. :-/

In the Start>Run box, enter shutdown -a
This will stop the automatic reboots.

What does the event viewer tell you?

Enter eventvwr.msc in the Start>Run box.

You're basically looking under the "Application" and "System" tabs for any red circles with a white "X" that coincide with your crashes.
Double clicking an entry will bring up a description of the event. Are there any common events?

ok, i've done that now. there are basically 3 errors in the SYSTEM tab that are always there.

1) SPTD - internal error in its data structures
2) AMLI : ACPI BIOS
-attempted to write to illegal IO port 0x70 which is in the protected range
3) AMLI : ACPI BIOS
-attempted to read from illegal IO port 0x71 which is in the protected range

the log also states that for 2 and 3, the protected range is 0x70 to 0x71.

i have no idea what this means....maybe someone does?

Do you have Daemon Tools installed?

It's much easier to troubleshoot if you post the full error details:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: xxxxx
Event Category: xxxxx
Event ID: xxx
Date: xxxxx
Time: xxxxx
User: xxxxx
Computer: xxxxx
Description: xxxxxx
