motherboard problem
« on: April 16, 2006, 10:37:44 PM »
i brought a compaq 157123-102 motherboard (could be a oem version of the mitac 6513wu motherboard) with a p3 1.0 gb processor off ebay. i put memory on it connected my keyboard, mouse
and monitor to it (it has onboard video) turned on the power, the cpu fan spins but it will not post. do i need to put it into a case to test it, nothing at all appears on the screen. could it be that i need to connect the front case power conection leads to the motherboard for it to post.

Have you checked that the power supply that you are using is fully compatible with the motherboard; just because the connectors match up does not neccessarily confirm electrical compatibility.

Best regards,

i think the ps is ok because i connected the hd and cd-rom and they seem ok. read on the internet that the compaq ps is a 145w and i have a 230w connected.

Compaqs use proprietary power supplies. Whether that one is "OK" or not is irrelevant as it most likely will never work in that machine.

The previous message about connectors is important and true as well.

Google for the correct power supply replacement.

A new motherboard is also proprietary for most HP's as well as other big makers. If the problem is the power supply, google for replacements. You will find HP's and certified HP compatible which may be just a little bit bigger. I certainly don't think you will find a compatible PSU > 250W.

i was thinking of taking the processor (pentium 3 1.0 g) out and buying a new motherboard which is not a hp or compaq. you know a stantard atx 370 motherboard. what do you think.

That sounds like a better idea than trying to use that MB, IF you are able to get the processor out, etc.
