I plugged a Logitech USB Optical Mouse into my SONY VAIO, unplugged it and now the laptop touchpad & buttons have stopped working! Tried recovery disc's to restore defaults with no success.

Look in the BIOS and see if there is a touchpad configuration feature that got disabled.

Thanks. Looked in BIOS and could not see any options for the touch pad. The touch pad should come up in device manager. There is a folder on C drive called pointing device with the ALPS drivers which would be the drivers, but the touch pad is not in device manager.

Touchpad will usually be under mouse or pointing devices, rather than listed as a touchpad.

Go to Add Remove Hardware and remove the mouse...re-boot and your touchpad will return.

Unfortunately you can't have both on a lot of laptops.

I have limited experience with laptops but I'm surprised to hear that.  I assumed they all would recognize both touchpad and mouse at the same time.  That just makes sense; surely, connecting a mouse to a laptop is a common practice.

Depends on the manufacturer and on how old it is...i've seen plenty that work and plenty that don't.
