Hard Drive Failing
« on: August 15, 2006, 06:48:56 PM »
Can anyone Help? I think my hard drive is about to die. It makes noises and does not boot most of the time. Can I just go out and buy a new hard drive or are there things I need to know about my system before I go to the store. I would like to install the new and move my files before removing the old drive. Is this normal proceedure or no? Thank You  :-?

Post some information about your machine and we can advise.

Download and run Everest, run a report (below Help on the menu) and then copy the information into a post here.

We need to know what you have to work with. How much space in files are we talking about? Any idea?

That's a nice enough board:

http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=KT6V-LSR

The first thing I would advise is to get some free space on drive C (15% is recommended and you have 9%)

Then run CCleaner (free at www.ccleaner.com)

Delete unneccesary stuff to make at least the 15% mark.

Download and run the free diagnostics from the Seagate site. It is called Seatools. It creates a boot floppy or CD. You start the machine with that in the drive and it will determine if your drive is fit. If it is, we can work on fixing the problemms. If it is not, another SATA drive would work, but there's no nense in spending some cash right now. Here's the page with the download:

http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/B7a.html

Seagate drives as you have are now produced with a 5 year warranty as well.

Let us know what you find out.

I have moved many files to my partitioned D: Drive, and downloaded ccleaner. Yet, as I look at ccleaner it looks like it is going to delete many many files. Is this dangerous? Or can I just go ahead and clean?

Clean away. How many megabytes are involved?

That's not much (about 4 floppies!), but every little bit helps. You will have to manually delete some for better performance.

Ok, last question. Looking at ccleaner, this is ONLY cleaning files right. In the (application) tab it looks like this will delete files that I may be using. Many Microsoft files and personnal Word files. Obveously you can see that I am new to this process. Another thing I should mention is lately, when the system does boot up I get a blue screen stating that the system is checking partition D: for inconsistencies and if I want; I can stop the process by entering any key. If I stop the process it goes right into Windows. If I don't stop the process, I runs through a large list of data (about 5 pages) before opening Windows. At one point while typing to you, the system frozz and a blue screen came up and stated: Windows needed to shut down to protect the computer. SOUNDS LIKE I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM RIGHT? I want to THANK YOU for the time you have been giving me with this issue.

I don't think the hard drive is about to fail, as per the title of this thread, but I believe there are multiple issues.

Do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall with if this becomes necessary?

CCleaner is quite safe; I've never heard of it removing files for which removal would have a negative impact on the operation of your computer.  It will not remove your Word, Excel, etc. files.  But, it will remove such things as the most recently opened files that you would normally see when open Word and click on File.  However, if you want it to exclude such cleaning, just uncheck the box for Office under Applications.

I think you should run the Issues scan in CCleaner and let it remove everything it identifies.  CCleaner will ask you whether you want to backup your registry first, and you should do so.

Yes, Ran Seagate. Followed instructions, booted system and seagate reported it could not locate my mouse. Although, It showed me many stats , could not acces the information. Needed to shut down manualy. Was not even able to warm boot. Removed Seagate boot floppy and the sysem booted up fine: with the Blue screen message: system is checking Drive D: for inconsistencies, press any key to stop check (not recomended) but I did stop and the system advanced into Windows. The message also says: Check to make sure cables are connected properly, check if jumpers are proper, Or check BIOS config.
