'Press any key to continue' not working
« on: October 21, 2006, 05:09:49 PM »
I was defragmenting my drive with Perfect Disk 8 when I got a blue screen. I followed some Microsoft troubleshooting tips, and it told me to run the disk error checking utitlity on My Computer>C:\ Drive (right click)/Properties/Tools/Error checking. So I did an error check. The problem was that it got stuck at 46% at Step 4/5. I restarted my computer and when it said 'Press any key to stop error checking' I pressed any key, but it didn't stop error checking. I tried this about 10 times. Same result. Then I entered BIOS Setup utility and selected 'Load Optimal Defaults' and saved changes and restarted. Then, I got an error that said NTLDR is missing please restart. So I found a solution on this site, which told me to use the XP bootable disk. When it says 'Press any key to boot disk' I press any key, and guess what? Nothing happens! It loads Windows XP bootscreen then, it goes to the disk checking which I scheduled (which I still freezes at 46% and can't be aborted)
I have tried 3 different keyboards.

Please help!

System Specs...
Microsoft XP Home Edition
Motherboard: Asrock
That's about all I know, since I can't load Windows on that computer.

The important detail, which is missing, is what happened prior to this. See below.

Optimal defaults is probably not a good choice...try standard

The better thing is not to alter the original post since people are not likely to re-read it looking for info that was not there when first posted. I know I don't.  ;)

"PerfectDisk® Version 8.0, the world's most popular and thorough disk defragmentation solution..."

From their ad, which I don't think is true at all. I just love internet ads! I think the most popular is the free one built into Windows that most individuals use. I have never even heard of this one. Oh, well.

If anything goes wrong during a write during defrag the files can be irreparably damaged. If that is indeed what caused it, you may be looking at a reinstall of Windows, or at least a repair install. As it happened right after this, that seems the most likely cause for the problem.

I don't think I have a 'Standard' choice. Just Optimal.

And GX1_Man, after the blue screen it worked fine cause I went on IE to view the disk checking utulity. It was only after I loaded Optimal Defaults which it started screwing up. I know how to fix the NTLDR Not Found problem, but when it says Press Any Key to boot from CD/Press any key to stop error checking, pressing any key (or frantically bashing the keyboard) doesn't work.

Yes I tried one of those but I think you need to fully turn on your comp for the keyboard to work, cause the keyboard doesn't even work at all.

You can get into the BIOS with a PS/2 keyboard? Is it functional there? Those items are long before Windows even attempts to load.

No, I tried using a PS/2 keyboard, but it didn't work... at all. I usually use a USB keyboard.

Are you certain that keyboard is in working order ? ?
    The above instructions should work.
Unless your PS2 jack is shot.

Let's don't confuse the issue with three keyboards at once. Pick a PS/2 and with the machine off, plug it in. Now restart the machine. What happens now?

With 3 keyboards plugged in at once, no wonder you had issues...
