flashing power light
« on: October 23, 2006, 02:31:47 PM »
first of all, i use a powerstrip for my computer. on this powerstrip i have just my little speakers and my alarm clock hooked up. i got home today and i unplugged everything to bring it into another room. (because i had just reformated it and my linksys wireless wasnt working and i was gona call them, anyways...) i pluged the power cord right into the wall, pressed the power button, and no go. i checked the cord and it was pluged in, then i noticed the power light (right under the cord connection in the back) was flashing (not rapidly, like once a second, idk if that matters). i brought it back into my room and pluged it in where i always had and it still wouldnt power up. the only thing i can think of is that my powersupply might have got a surge, so before i buy one, i thought there might look into other possible answers. any suggestions would be appreciated! thanks  :)

notes: the computer was off when i unplugged it
i dont know anything about power supplies. haha
if u need any info on it though i can provide it (i do know where that is)  ;)

I assume you mean that there is an indicator light flashing on the back of the psu.  If so can you advise the make and model of your psu :-?

One good deed is worth more than a year of good intentions.

haha yes.
the model is: atx-250-12Z      Rev.: D2
Bestec makes it, and output is 250W max

after doing some searching i found people w/ this model (and Bestec in general) have had this problem, and people have told them to trash it and use a different brand. i dont know if its true that they are poor quality, but since there is little information about their company that i could find it leads me to believe it's true. what would you suggest? (as it seems i'll be buying a new power supply)

I never heard of Bestec, so I wouldn't trust it. I'd buy a CoolerMaster, Zalman or Antec..

Have you tried to reset the CMOS by removing the battery for 10 seconds?

    ?

Another dodgy brand if you ask me. Be prepared to spent at least double the amount you see there if you want a PSU that is trustworthy. Like This(Click).. Before you buy a PSU, read one or two reviews on it and see if its any good.

If your PC case is fully ATX you can replace it with any ATX PSU, however, with Dell machines and the like, this is often not the case, they have special form factors..

Did resetting the CMOS bring any results?

hmm this power supply "Antec SmartPower" seems good. i wouldnt spend that much though, however, there is a 25$ rebate on it right now bringing it into my price range.  ;D (my comp is a Compaq not a Dell btw) i assume its the standard size but ill check into that. Are you sure that this is going to work in my comp?

idk how to reset the CMOS, unless that just means unplugging it for awhile and then plugging it back in. i did that and it didnt fix it.

note- Best Buy geek squad says that "Rosewill RV350 ATX 350W Power Supply" will work as a replacement.

I can't quarantee that it will, considering that it's a Compaq; perhaps you should contact Hewlett Packard (Compaq) and ask them if you can replace the PSU or if you need of one theirs, and if you need one of theirs, what the reason for that would be.

If you did not remove a battery of any sorts, there is a 99% chance you didn't reset the CMOS. Unless the battery is depleted and needs to be replaced.

Compaq wouldnt even tell me what the flashing LED means unless i buy a one year warranty for 100$ yea right. they're not gona tell me what parts would work. i could always return it if it dosnt work...

lol i dont know what the battery looks like, where it is, or how to take it out.

It's on the mainboard. Open the case and see if you can find. It is usually a CR2032 battery (Round/flat) but since this is a Compaq, there might be no battery but another solution. If such is the case, look for a CMOS_RESET jumper or dipswitch.. I have never seen a modern Compaq from the inside so I can't really tell you what you're looking for.

As for Compaq not telling you what you need to know, try E-mailing their support and just ask them what you need to know if you phoned them previously. Otherwise do it the other way around.

What is the model of your Compaq? Perhaps you could remove the Compaq PSU and take a picture of the inside of your case and the top of the PSU so that we can determine if it is standard ATX.

Or just fetch a PSU from another no-brand PC and put it in, see if it fits.

Three options, choose your pick.  ;)

It is round and flat, about the size of a nickel that lays down flat on the motherboard in a small holder that keeps it clipped in. I cannot see it clearly in the picture.

Here is what a battery looks like:

    http://shopproducts.howstuffworks.com/Laptop+Accessories/SF-1/PID-23372102

It could be anywhere on the motherboard:

ah ok thank you i found A battery. i assume its the one. heres where i found it. (btw its not laying flat on the motherboard)

    http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/355/hpim0605batteryxx7.jpg

I took it out and it says this on it:

    KTS
    Lithium battery
    Japan STD
    CR2032

that site says that i should replace it after 2 years. so wheather this is the problem or not, its been 2 years so i will replace this.

Ok then. Let us know if it makes any difference. Radio Shack or any computer store will have them. About $5.
