USB Drive - Erased???!?!!
« on: November 21, 2006, 07:39:32 AM »
I have a Western Digital 80GB external HD, connects through USB.

Works great. Have backups for both machines on it.

Having trouble - as noted in Windows forum - with one machine booting. I ran a backup on Friday, but downloaded some stuff Sunday.

So I plug the HD into my machine, boot off the UBCD4WIN CD, and my external HD doesn't appear when it's done booting....

So I unplug it, and plug it into my "good" machine, and it's NOT RECOGNIZED!!!!

Reboot, still NOT RECOGNIZED!!!!!

If I click on the Safely Remove Hardware tray icon, it shows "USB Mass Storage" device... But it's not mapped anywhere!!!

I don't care HOW it happened... How can I recover my data???!?!?

(And before the finger-waggers post - there is no "Safely Remove Hardware" option in UBCD's shell....)
Dan: You're gonna need to get someone to fix my computer.                     Kim: What's wrong with it?                     Dan: It's in several pieces on my floor.

And if you right click on it in My Computer and choose properties what does it say for File System? Was it previously an NTFS format?

I fear I know the answer. Have a read here:

I don't think you hardware has failed you. I believe Windows has. As for a solution:

I'm travelling for the holiday, so I can't answer those q's til I get back. (Doing this on my palm pilot.)

I HAVE made a live linux cd (SLAX Kill Bill)... it did NOT recognize the external drive when I tried earlier. Are there "mounting" instructions I should know?

Thanks!

I have not used the Kill Bill edition, but I would suggest you try the Linspire LiveCD in that link. Nothing to mount there.

Well, in "Kill Bill", it DOES recognize usb sticks as soon as I plug them in... Just not my external HD.

Can't work on this til next Tuesday... Very frustrating not knowing how I'm getting out of this!

See you next Tuesday then. Happy Thanksgiving.

What happens when that drive is plugged into a different computer?

Linspire's 60 bucks. Sounds like a shot in the dark... I'd be better off buying data recovery software. I PRESUME that this is a NTFS drive, right?

The live CD is free from the link I gave you.

What are the properties of the USB drive if you right click on it? It should show the file system.

It doesn't show up anywhere, so I CAN'T right-click it. The ONLY info I can find on it is in Device Manager, as posted above.

The link you gave for Linspire ultimately dies... Nothing there to download. Unless I have TOTALLY lost it.

Try this link direct from Linspire, but you will need a BitTorrent client like BitTornado:

Thanks. I'll try it tomorrow. I'm a big fan of Azureus.

Alright, I've built a Linspire Live CD, and I have similar issues as with the Kill Bill. (btw, I like the interface of Linspire a lot more. Thanks)

Issues:

- STILL can't see USB drive! Arrgggh!

- Also - in neither of the Live environments, I can NOT move/delete any files that are on my main HD. At first I thought it might have to do with the protection of the various Windows users' "Documents" subdirectories, but even in MAIN subdirectories, if I try to delete a file, I get a "Cannot access"... Now, I can LAUNCH those same files, just not delete them.

Any thoughts on THAT thread-jumping second point?

Thanks!
