Windows M.E.-Bios Checksum Error
« on: December 02, 2006, 09:54:33 AM »
I got a freebie computer from my friend but its not in the best of shape.  If i can fix it, i can actually get it set up to be a pretty decent computer. So heres my problem.  When i turn the system on, i get the message "Bios Rom Checksum Error--Detecting Floppy Drive A Media--INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS A".  I'm still new to this computer stuff but i'm willing to learn and i want to fix this computer. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

O.S.--Windows M.E.
Motherboard--Asus p4s8x

Change the CMOS battery and post back what happens.

You need to change the CMOS battery.

Is this the floppy disk that came with the computer
your fixing?

I changed the battery with a new one but the same problem arises.  As for the floppy disk, this was a custom built computer so it really didn't come with the computer.

A windows ME computer that came with no floppy drive? That was uniusual for that vintage. Does the computer have a hole where the floppy drive would be?

And you get the identical error message? Absolutely no change with replacing that battery with a brand new one?

I have a floppy drive (misread the previous question wrong). But yeah, no change after replacing the battery.

What if you try to start with a boot disk in the floppy drive? (Get the appropriate download at www.bootdisk.com if you don't have one.)

Well did you get the bootdisk creator GX1_Man recommended?

I'm not convinced he even got the battery that was recommended...

It would be helpful to know the history of this machine. If someone screwed up a BIOS update this is never going to work.

Why don't you unhook EVERYTHING except the CPU/Fan, 1 stick of RAM and the video. Remove the battery for 10 seconds and reinsert it, then try to boot the machine.

This was a BRAND NEW battery?
