A) And if you right click on it and choose properties what is the file system listed?

B) What is the file system on your C drive?

C) How was this drive previously formatted?

D) Are you using XP?

Are you watching, Patio?

Prediction of answers:

A) RAW

B) NTFS

C) NTFS or "I don't Know"

D) Yes

This probably means that the device was un-plugged without being properly shut down through the tray icon...
You could try to use data recovery software on it such as PCInspector but don't get your hopes up too high.
