The easiest way is to format the drive and only install XP. There are a lot of ways to screw it up by tinkering with things. Is there only one hard drive? Only one partition?

You cannot format the drive Windows is on while running Windows.

In Windows XP, you will get an error message that says

Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
