Undulating Hum on Seagate
« on: February 07, 2007, 05:26:07 PM »
Recently picked up a Seagate ST3400620A.  It didn't do this while formatting it after install, but now, when the computer is idle, it makes an odd noise - all hard drives usually have just a steady hum, this one the pitch kind of increases, drops back to a steady hum, then increases again, ever so slightly, then back to a steady hum - usually I've come to think this is a sign of a mechanical defect of some sort but I find that hard to believe with a fresh out of the box unit - also, another seagate (not a new one) that I borrowed from a friend several months ago did the same undulating hum thing - any ideas as to what's actually wrong?

Could be just resonance into the case. I have small felt washers i use just for this purpose.
