Hard drive Size ???
« on: March 17, 2007, 02:55:19 PM »
I have 2 Maxtor drives, one is 300GB, the other 320GB, the 300GB shows only 120GB and the 320GB shows 137GB. Where did all the other GB's go? I am using other large drives in my system with out any problem.
How can I repair my problem?

Thank you

Maxtor has been acquired by Seagate...

You can visit the following for support:

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Installation_Assistance&vgnextoid=dce3b27d0434e010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

There's also a thread, somewhere on this forum board for hard drive diagnostics...

I'll see if I can find it...duh...it's right here:

http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1122425778

However, the link posted will just redirect you to Seagate, so use the first link I supplied, above.

1. What are your system specifications ?

2. You probably have an older computer, say, vintage '99-'00 or somewhere thereabouts.
Machines of that era can only typically address up to 137GB
The 137GB ceiling.
The way that I have addressed this issue is to flash BIOS with the latest update that usually contains instructions for "Large Drive Recognition"

3. Flashing BIOS has risks. If done incorrectly, the computer will not boot.
In the 99% of cases done correctly, the computer gains a new lease on its service life.

4. System info is needed.

Flashing the BIOS would be their last resort...

A hard drive diagnostic tool would be better in this case.

I'll bet you right now that there is nothing wrong with those drives  :)
It's most likely a large drive recognition issue.

Place your bet  ;)

A hard drive diagnostic tool is not just used to diagnose the hard drive, but can actually be used to configure the drive for use with their PC.

Most hard drives come with this software...if they were purchased new.  If they weren't...like I said, they can visit the manufacturer's website to download this software.

I never said anything was wrong with his hard drives.  Did you visit the link I posted?  They'll find their answer there.

Updated...

Here is the software they should download and use to configure their hard drive(s):
