How do I format my hard drive?

I know that i have to make some type of floppy disk and run it and type something in.  what do i type

I made a MS-DOS disk and it ran but when i typed the command "format c:" it said the command was invailed.

Whats wrong?

How did you create the disk?  How did you "run" it, from Windows or when computer was powered on.
