Hard Drive testing software
« on: October 17, 2004, 11:50:36 AM »
I have a Western Digital Caviar 31600 and the latest Western Digital lifeguard version 5.04C. However, when I attempt to boot from the Diskette it tells me that my Hard Disk Drive is indeed a Western Digital, but not supported by that version. I have looked on the Western Digital website but could not find a Lifeguard Diskette that would work with older HDD's.

Is there brand-less Lifeguard software avaible?

Try older version (EZDrive903W.zip):  http://www.storagedrivers.com/companies/1145.htm

Cheers.

While I'm at - When you attempt to access a Hard Disk Drive and it tells you that is an invalid Media format, is it failing or improperly configured?

I have had a Western Digital fail on me after formatting it, but first it showed that error and when formatting it kept trying to recover lost sectors. Eventually it ended up making the mainboard go haywire and I had to take everything out and reinsert to get it working again.

However, I have another Western Digital that also said it was of an 'Invalid Media format' (If I remember correctly) then it asked me to 'Abort, Retry or fail" when I pressed F (fail) It told me that the volume name was incorrect. I formatted again and it no longer showed the error. Is this hard drive deteriorating as well?
