Monitor Trouble
« on: April 22, 2007, 11:42:26 AM »
I have both a Samsung SyncMaster 710T (Native Res. 1280x1024) and 940BW (Native Res. 1440x900).  I was trying to get a dual monitor setup going when I started to have trouble with the 940BW. The resolution on my desktop got set to 1280x1024 on that monitor and when I bumped it back up to the native resolution (1440x900) I had all sorts of display corruption (horizontal lines, black artifacts, generally scrambled picture).  So, I plugged in my 710T and set the resolution on my desktop back down to 1280x1024 and set it to display only on a single monitor. I turned off the computer and hooked my 940BW back up and booted up.
At the lower resolution I didn't get the display corruption (just the general fuzzyness from not being at native res.) but when I tried then to bump it back up to 1440x900 it came back. I went ahead at this point and checked the display resolution from my monitor's menu and although the resolution in Windows was 1440x900 my monitor was still showing 1280x1024.
I've run out of ideas on how to fix this and was wondering if anyone else did.

Might help if you tell us more about your hardware.  Are you using a single video card to support the two monitors?  What card is it?  Do you have a fairly current driver installed for your card?  Have you ever run two monitors on this system prior to this attempt?

Sure! I was attempting to set it up on one video card (GeForce 6800GT), I am running the 93.71 version drivers, and this was my first attempt at getting two monitors set up.

So, you have one regular monitor and one widescreen monitor.  Right?  It may not matter but does your video card have two DVI connectors or one VGA and one DVI?

I run dual monitors but they're both 17 inch CRT, set at the same resolution (1024x768).  So, I'm not sure I can help you with this, but let's see whether someone else from the posse has some thoughts.

I do wonder whether the two different types of monitors is making this more complicated for you.

Yes, one is standard and the other is widescreen. My video card has 2 DVI ports. But the issue isn't with the dual monitor setup. The problems I am experiencing with the widescreen persist even if it is the only one connected and my system is setup to display on a single monitor. It only started while working with the dual monitors.

Make sure it is set to DualView, rather than Clone or Spanning, as the latter two modes require the same resolution.

I don't have the dual monitor setup anymore. If I can get the one fixed I have a second video card I can drop in for DualView, though.
