upgrade operating system
« on: June 19, 2007, 04:06:17 PM »
I wanted to upgrade my OS from windows 2000PRo to Windows XPpro.  All system requirements are met, with the exception of those of the Bus Clock.  I have it at 100 megahertz, and 300 are needed.  How would I go about changing that, or should I just wait and get a new computer?

100MHz, huh? I'm surprised you even got Win2k to run on there. The minimum requirement for Windows 2000 is at least 133MHz. I bet it runs slow.

I suspect front side bus speed is being confused with CPU speed here...

      Thats right.

I would not reccomend upgrading the OS before upgrading the PC, in any case.

I have to agree with everyone else,  upgrade your computer first or you are wasting money on an OS that is not going to run or will barely run.

Thanks for the input.  I guess its just more cost efficient to get a new computer, which isn't feasible right now. :(

but I'll post the specifications anyway, just in case:

        Dell Dimension XPS R400

Processor: 400 megahertz Intel Premium II
        32 kilobyte primary memory cache
        512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Drives: 8.45 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
5.00 Gigabytes hard drive free space

        Main Circuit Board
        Bus Clock 100 megahertz

        384 MB of RAM

That's a good solid setup for Win2K...to be honest it's probably the most stable OS that MS has ever released...i'd stick with what you have.

Also since it's an older machine you may find some real bargains out there on RAM.

Travel to crucial.com and enter the machine specs and it will tell you which type exactly that machine can use.
At this point your biggest bang for your dollar would be more RAM.
