Replaced Hard Drive - XP Takes Forever To Load
« on: June 23, 2007, 08:58:20 PM »
I just replaced the hard drive on my laptop and then installed XP.  Now it takes a good 30 minutes just to get my computer booted up.  I'm confused - and maybe there was more wrong with my laptop than the old hard drive I replaced.  Has anyone had this happen?

So you replaced your laptop hard drive and it's loading slowly.
Maybe check all your connections or try reformatting and reinstalling.

Did you install all the drivers etc?
It would be a good idea to reformat and reinstall.

We don't know the age, or even the make of the laptop at this point.  ::)

Ok...the hard drive that was in the laptop was an IBM Travelstar 4200 RPM 40 GB.  I put in a Seagate 5400 RPM 80 GB.  My laptop is an HP ze5170.  I've reformatted the new hard drive and reinstalled the OS twice now with the same results.  I replaced the original one because it crashed.

    Motherboard drivers installed ? ?

Check in Control Panel /System/Hardware/Device Manager...right clik IDE controller and report back what the properties say.

I will be happy to give that information once this thing actually boots up.  I've been waiting an hour now and there is a progression line that is moving VERY slowly.  It's moving.  It's just moving at a snails pace.

Update - it never booted up after several retries.  So, reformatted hard drive and reinstalled XP.  Trying again.  If I can get Windows up and running, I'll provide the Device Manager info on IDE Controller.

OK, in Device Manager, under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controller" the following is listed:

ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
    Primary IDE Channel
    Secondary IDE Channel

When I right-click on the ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller and choose Properties, there are a lot of tabs with information.  I'm not sure what information you were looking for, however, under Device Status, it says "This device is working properly."

I'm not even sure what it means to update the BIOS.  I honestly am not sure what is wrong with this thing, but the IT guy at work today said that I could have purchased a hard drive that was just bad right out of the box.  Is that likely?
