Frequency out of range?
« on: June 30, 2007, 11:45:14 AM »
Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong place - I'm not incredibly technical!

My computer is the Windows XP version. I tried to change the screen area/display back to its original 1024 x 768 display. At first it worked, but now whenever I turn my computer on, it seems to be working, but then the screen goes completely blank and a message reading:

'98.9 KHz/120.1Hz
FREQUENCY OUT OF RANGE
TRY OTHER RESOLUTIONS'

Keeps flashing up. Because I can't see anything else, I tried to turn the computer on using safe mode, which worked. Problem is...I'm not aware of how I'm supposed to change the resolution back to how it was in order to get it back to how it was.

And that probably makes no sense! However, if anyone knows how to sort it, I would be eternally grateful!

Thank you in advance  :)
Emily

Your problem may be the refresh rate of your monitor.

What is the make and model of the display adapter in your computer?

I'm really sorry, as I said I'm not particularly technical! How do I find out that information?

Open Control Panel...click the system icon...select the Hardware tab...click the Device Manager button.

You sould see a list of hardware installed on your computer.  Look for Display Adapters and click the "+" sign next to it.

Write down and include this info in your next post.

Boot the computer into Safe Mode:

Once there...you can go into Control Panel/Display and put the settings back to the way you had them.

Let us know if you have any issues...

Thank you for your help!  :)
I've got the computer onto Safe Mode, and in 'display' I clicked on 'settings' and then 'Advanced' in order to change the settings - but under 'monitor' on the screen refresh rate, the only option available is 'Use hardware default setting' ... there's nothing else on there to pick, so where am I supposed to go from there?

That being the case...what do you currently have your Settings at for your display?

I mean...what is the screen resolution set at and the Color Quality?

Are you absolutely sure your computer monitor supports 1024 x 768 resolution?

The settings you want should be under the adapter tab.

I did manage to set the resolution at 1024 x 768 and it was working fine until I turned it off and turned it on the next day and the messages started to appear.

Under 'adapter' all that appears for the information is:
    <unavailable>

Have you tried a system restore?

Just thought I'd update you all on what's happened in case anyone else has a similar problem in the future.

I performed a system restore on my computer (start - accessories - system tools - system restore) and it's fine now!

Thank you for all your help  ;)

Right click on your desktop. go to properties. click on the settings tab. click Advanced. Click the Adapter tab.
Then click "List all modes" and pick a resolution and refresh rate that is in the range of your monitor.
