as much as you can afford... 160 GB if you have the money. You do not say what maker or model the laptop is.

Hmmm, contrex, I gotta hand it to you.  If this guy is asking for recommendations on how large a hard drive he should get, I couldn't interpret that from his post.  ... "from 10G to what Giga Byte required", what's that?  Anyway, might more info be needed to determine whether his laptop would recognize a 160GB HD?

Hi Soybean, my reasoning ran as follows

    1. The title of the thread is "Internal Hard Disk"

    2. The question starts

    Quote
Hi im planning to upgrade my laptop Hard Drive from 10G
    (spelling corrected)

That suggested strongly that the question is about, er, um, upgrading a laptop hard drive. (Are you with me so far? I know this is heavy duty rocket science, but try to keep up.)

Now, why do we "upgrade" a hard drive? Nine times out of ten, to get more space. So possibly this guy or gal is looking for a bigger hard drive.

    (Are you still with me?)

    3. The question continues

    Quote
    to what Giga Byte required

Ok. Now we get to the meat of the matter! The words

    Quote
    Giga Byte

are a Big Clue to what is on this guy's mind. What is measured in "Giga Bytes"? Well, RAM is these days, but given that he titled the thread "Internal Hard Disk", I think we can discount that one.

So the evidence stacks up that he or she is asking about what size of hard disk to upgrade to. I wonder if you have an alternative interpretation? If so, I have yet to see it.

    4. A Pentium 3 laptop with 384 Mb RAM is probably recent enough to take a 160 GB hard drive. I may be wrong there, and I concede that details of maker, model, etc might well be required. In any case, partitioning  and/or a drive overlay would most likely enable use of the full drive capacity. I agree that these options may not be suitable for a non-technical user.

You may have hit the target.  I'm still not sure.  When he said Giga Byte, I assumed he was talking about the company, Giga-Byte Technology Co., Ltd.  Here's one of their pages: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Notebook/Default.aspx

Sure would be helpful to have some feedback from malvin1578.

Soybean, is English your first language? I am beginning to wonder about that.

    1. The "Gigabyte" of Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd is one word.
    2. That company does not make hard disks.
    3. The question is about "upgrading a hard disk from 10 GB"
    4. Why are you attacking me on this?

Sorry if you feel I'm attacking you.  Actually, I thought I was, in a way, complementing you for interpreting a very poorly written original post.  If my comments are viewed as an attack, please view them as an indirect attack on the OP for such a poorly written post.

I can't believe you said that.  I believe I've done my share of deciphering difficult-to-read posts.  For example: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=38341.new;topicseen#new

Yes, I know #1 and #2.  But, they also make Notebook computers.  So, I'd say the OP could have been referring to a Gigabyte computer and, when he said, "...from 10G to what Giga Byte required to my Pentium 3 450Mhz ...", he could have actually meant a maximum drive size for that Gigabyte notebook (which he calls a laptop).  Honestly, I just don't know what he meant. The phrase, "Giga Byte required", simply makes no sense.

Anyway, I think you've, indeed, given the OP the best interpretation and recommendation possible, given the wording you had to work with.

I'm beginning to feel doubtful myself now, given that Gigabyte make notebooks. The best thing is if the OP returns and clarifies. Sorry if I was touchy before.

        [i]soybean and contrex,

        for clarification...

im here and  to get some suggestion/ information to uprade the internal hard drive of my Laptop for some additional storage space. From 10GB that im using now to what maximum "GB" can possible install to my IBM Laptop Pentium3 450Mhz with 384MB RAM, OS-WinXP.

Your suggestion to 160GB Hard Drive to Pentium3, i think it not possible according to some Computer Technician nearest here.

If you look at the bottom of your laptop, you'll probably find the exact model and a serial number.  With that info, try some Google searches to see whether you can find a site showing the exact specifications and upgrade limitations for it.

What do you use the laptop for?  If you're not going to put a lot of photos and/or music files on it, an 80GB drive might be quite adequate.
