how can i make 2 Monitor's Work at once
    « on: July 28, 2007, 05:35:29 AM »
I have a laptop with an external VGA port. I have a monitor which i want to connect to my laptop and see my laptop on both monitors. I plugged the monitor into my laptop, it showed up on the monitor but the laptop's screen went black. How can i make it viewable on both screens?
    Regards,

What make and model is your laptop?  What's your OS?  Was the display on the external monitor your normal laptop display, with all the icons, the taskbar, etc.?

Try this.  Connect the external monitor again and startup.  Assuming the same thing happens again, right click on the screen and select Properties.  Select the Settings tab.  Do you see two monitors graphically represented there?

I'll wait until you respond to the above questions before going further.

      Windows Vista.

The external monitor had the taskbar etc but my laptop screen went blank

I presume it's showing #1 as the external monitor and #2 as the laptop monitor, based on it's behavior.  The active monitor will appear brighter in the Settings panel; the other one, somewhat grayed out.  Right click on #2, or the inactive one, and check the box for "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor."  You might also want to check the box for "Use this device as the primary monitor."  Click Apply and OK.  How are we doing now?

"... in a few weeks?"  ???  You won't be using that laptop for that long?  Why, then, did you ask about this now?

I meant "With in" a few weeks. I asked now because there could be a chance i use it tomorrow.

and it currently has no operating system on it.

go to control panel, then display go to settings click on the big #2, and below check box that says extend my windows desktop onto this monitor. You can now drag icons over to the monitor. you can also minimize a window and drag it to that monitor. It's like having two computers.
