re format hard drive?
« on: August 07, 2007, 10:59:48 PM »
Hi I'm new to this site I was hoping someone could help me.

I am trying to refomat my hard drive as I have a few problems and would like to start fresh.

My OS is windows XP home, I have backed up all data and I have been researching how to reformat a hard drive for a few weeks now. I'm sure I can do it but I am having trouble getting started.

I have changed the set up in BIOS to boot from a cd,  when the computer is loading and the message "press any key to boot from cd" appears I press a key(well have have just about tried pressing every key) nothing happens it still boots into windows. What am I doing wrong?

I have all the disks and information needed to reformat my hard drive but I can't get the computer to boot from a cd.

Any suggestions on how to sort this problem out would be great.

Thanks

If using a USB keyboard, maybe computer cannot see it at CD-ROM boot stage  because USB legacy support not enabled in the BIOS setup. Try a PS/2 type to enable CD-ROM boot choice keypress and also to enable BIOS setup access.

PS/2 keyboards use this plug. PS/2 is an old IBM term and is NOTHING to do with Playstations!

contrex thankyou very much I plugged my keyboard in properly(I had it plugged in through the usb as I usually use a wireless keyboard) and it all worked perfectly I now have a clean computer and hopefully no more problems.

This site is great now I know where to go if I have any more problems

Ha, I love that.  It's surprising how many people actually think we're talking about PlayStation2.

And bjh, I'm glad to hear everything is sorted out.  I hope our fine folks here will be able to help you out with other future problems you may come across.

Everybody I mention PS/2 connectors to, who is aged under about 35, thinks I am talking about Playstations!

I should just mention that there is a PS/2 mouse connector as well. The keyboard one is usually a sort of purple mauve violet colour and the mouse one is usually green.

Another name for them is "mini-DIN" connectors.
