please help me as i no idea howi can fix problem

i have a custom built xphome pc everything been fine apart from a bit slow running lately, but when i been shutting pc down i`ve been having problems to get it starting up again, but tonight i went to shut it down because windows updates requested it to carry on with the updates i did so, but on turning pc back on and after what seems like a million attempts i now keep getting  "FDC fAILURE" then under neath it says to press F1 TO CONTINUE, on the page where i can go to safe mode from, i have changed battery but battery wasnt new,  as it off a game that has been hardly used ,
I am begging for help as i have photos etc on there i was going to save tonight and am on a stuck as how to get it fixed, all help will be appreciated, thank you to all that can help me  from satin

Please let us know some info. about the computer. Type, speed, size of RAM, type of Operating system, type of anti-virus used. FDC means floppy disc controller. Does your computer have a floppy drive? Any new hardware or software added lately?

yes it has a floppy disc drive,
only thing i have done it taken java off and done windows updates and turned pc off to start it up so updates can carry on , i am using my partners laptop now as i cant use my pc , it is a windows xp home edition my pc,

sorry have been using same antivirus for as long as i have used pc which is AVG, i have adaware aswell on it

 :'(thanks for link, but i dont understand everything in it, i have tried a few of them but none of them worked, myproblem is on loading and not to do with when pc has loaded,  i cant get further than the page with which i can go onto safe mode through, without FDC failure and press F1 to presume, after i press F1 it goes to page saying about being being sorry couldnt load properly then when i try and read what it is all saying page goe blank and then a box comes up with no signal and then it goes back to the original page for going into safe mode or  setup etc on it, i have unplugged the cables at the back of the floppy drive and motherboard and put them all back and still nothing,  ..... if anything can be done to help me i would really appreciate it, as i am i a loss as my kids go back to school in a few days and they need pc to do homework on and unable to afford a new one being a single parent,  so anyone that can help me with EASY instructions is very much appreciated,  thanks for taking time to read this even if you havent posted a reply .....

A quick question.  Is there a floppy disk in the drive that may be a corrupted disk?
