    how to deactivate beep noise?
    « on: September 08, 2007, 07:26:43 AM »
I have an IBM Intellistation that beeps loudly every time a window pops up or emails come in. I looked in the BIOS and couldnt find any settings that deactivated the audio, so I tried in Windows XP's control panel (sounds- and audio devices). There I deselected several sounds that were located to different windows happenings, but none shut off the noise when pop-ups occur.

Because I dont really want to have any noise, I tried to open the small tower but because it is a 2nd hand pc there is no key to unlock the framework. Otherwise I could have maybe cut off the connection to the speaker.

Also I deactivated the "Windows Audio" service in the administration - services section (C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs) but it still cant be killed !

Maybe I deactivated the wrong service, because I think that just deactivates additional audio devices / hardware that are installed separately. I guess the sound chip that I want to deactivate is directly on the moterboard?

If it is onboard sound, try disabling AC97 audio in the bios.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

        Hi...

Yes it'll be the onboard sound and in the BIOS I already disabled the AC97 option. There are no speakers attached to the pc as I dont want any sound to occur.

It has nothing to do with a pop-up blocker - it's not just pop-ups but also normal windows warning signs. Every time there's an annoying beep that I just dont want.... from my point of view the whole audio can be disabled.

Am I right in thinking that I can do an override in the system "services" section to force it to be disabled???

Open your e-mail program and under Tools/Options or Account Settings disable audio notification on new mail...

Actually I have already done that and that is the only beep that I managed to get rid of.

I would be happy if at least the beep on the appearance of pop-up windows in Internet Explorer would disappear  ??? ... and no, I cant just use a pop-up blocker, I need the pop-up windows.

I think your answer is back in there, have you tried setting them all to 'none'?

I deactivated them all now. In the first 'Volume' section there are no audio devices (always has been like that) and I deselected all the settings in the 'sounds' section.

Could it help to deinstall the devices in the hardware (last tab) section? Do I have to be careful upon deinstalling any of the drivers there.... I could post them if you think it could solve the problem.

Yes, in the first tab at the top it says there are no audio devices and in the second "sounds" section I have deactivated all sounds by deactivating the speaker symbols infront of each item.

But what about the last tab with the drivers as I stated earlier?

So, in the control panel---Device Manager--Sound,video and game controllers---Right click on your sound device----Go to properties--
Device usage----Do not use this device (disable)

                Have you tried that?

Then it's the case speaker which is hooked up to the MBoard...however any beeps coming from this normally indicate trouble so it may not be best to unhook it.
It's probably a temperature alarm which means your system is running hot for some reason and you risk frying expensive components...
Consult your MBoard manual for more info.

In the old days :D if you didn't have a sound card installed and running then programs & possibly Windows reverted to using the PC speaker, some people will remember getting beeps for gunshots etc.
Perhaps you need to get your sound all up and working properly, drivers installed etc, to then be able to turn off the sounds you don't want to hear from your Control Panel or do as I do and turn the volume knob down to zero.

I appreciate you guys replying to my posts.... that means there's still hope!  :P

It wont be an alarm indicating trouble because the beeps only occur when windows pop-up or a windows warning sign shows... !!

As the beeps come from the PC speaker, I don't know now whether deinstalling the drivers under "Hardware" in the audio and sounds section in windows would even change anything. Is there maybe some freeware out there that can override and deactivate the beeping from the motherboard? Or could even a chip flash update help?

It surely cant be that difficult just to switch off a d**n beep alltogether without opening the case  ???
It's too bad that disabling AC97 audio in the bios didnt work  >:(
