Mouse will work for one minute
« on: September 29, 2007, 07:09:26 AM »
I have tried all the troubleshooting suggestions for my mouse problems but nothing has worked.  My mouse will work for one to two minutes, then quit.  If I unplug it and try another USB port, it will work for another minute or two, then quit again.  Has anyone ever encountered this problem?  Thanks for any suggestions!

No, the mouse isn't wireless.  I have tried another mouse, and it does exactly the same thing.  It will work for a short time, then just quit.

Is it an optical mouse?

Have you tried using a different USB port?

Yes, unfortunately I've tried all four of them.

Everyone should have a PS2 mouse and keyboard...if only for troubleshooting.
Are you un-plugging the mouse and plugging it back in while the machine is running ? ?

Do you have any other devices connected to the USB ports?

If I'm saying this correctly, it doesn't appear that I have a PS2 port.  Is that possible?  I have a Toshiba laptop.  And no, I don't have anything else connected to any of the USB ports.  To answer the other question, yes, I have been unplugging and plugging the mouse while my laptop is still running.  Is that bad???  Thanks for everyone's help so far!

It will not hurt the mouse to plug and unplug while the computer is on. that is for a USB, mouse. the PS2 mouse and keyboard you must turn the computer off. any USB device is hot swappable. meaning it can be plugged in or removed while the computer is on.  normally you would click the safely remove hardware icon on your notification bar, and then select which device to stop, before removing it.

I completely disagree on the contention that USB is hot-swappable...

USB was supposed to be hot-swappable but it's far from it.
If you don't think so then disconnect your flash drive and/or external hard drive and post back with the results...

I disconnect my flash drive all the time with no problem. the key is that you have to click the safely remove hardware icon in the notification area, and then remove the hardware.

    That's not hot-swapping...
