Monitor problems caused by commercial dehumidifiers?
« on: October 02, 2007, 08:39:50 AM »
Good morning~
I have a Sony Vaio flat screen monitor and I run Windows XP.  We had a hot water leak under our kitchen floor, and last week Disaster Restoration came in and put five commercial dehumidifiers in our house.  Two of then are huge, and are about 20 feet away from my computer.  Three of them are smaller, but one sits directly behind me.  These have been running 24/7 for over a week now.  Last night, the color on my monitor went wonky~everything is sort of purple.  No matter what, I couldn't seem to fix it or find the reason for it.  This morning, after having been in standby mode overnight, the colors were fine for half an hour.  Now it's all purple again.

So, that was a very long winded way of asking: do these dehumidifiers have anything to do with my monitor problems?  I'm an eBay seller and NEED to use my computer for everything, but cannot edit photos with the color out of whack.

Many thanks in advance!

    Do you have an UPS or good quality surge suppresser with EMI/RFI suppression?

    I'm an Internet whiz, but dense when it comes to computers.  I do have a surge suppressor, but I'm not sure what EMI/RFI is.  If that were the problem, wouldn't I have noticed this before?
    I am so frustrated right now.  If it's the dehumidifier, then I'll want to turn it off, but I don't want to do that if it's not!

      EMI = electro-magnetic interference
      RFI = radio frequency interference

      You can check to see if those motors (especially if on the same circuit as the computer) are causing a problem by turning them all off and see if the problem persists. When turning them back on, do it one at a time and wait a sufficient amount of time in between to see if the problem returns.

      ... but one sits directly behind me.  ...

      Just curious -  how close is the closest dehumidifier to the monitor?

      Also,  do you expect to be required to keep them running much longer?

      If you have or can borrow a spare monitor...try that first...then see how it goes.

      I had this happen to my daughter's computer and ended up replacing the monitor.
