<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe HELP
« on: October 03, 2007, 04:21:00 AM »
All of a sudden i get this message when i turn on computer

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file

The day before the computer was working properly
I insert the Windows XP disk and when the options come up
I want to type R so i can go to Recovery mode but
i can't choose any of the options the keyboard is not responding.
I've tried 3 different boards,no help at all.
1 was a USB other 2 were the normal boards.
The boards all work on other computers
Once the wait is over to automaticly choose a boot option, it says
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.
How do i fix this?
Please help me its my friends computer and they dont want to loose
their photos that are on their hardrive

First, try system restore if you have been periodically saving good installs.
Usually, you an boot to your windows CD, and run Windows XP in repair mode... but this could be malware as well.
The computer believed that this file is corrupt: C:\WINNT\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe
This is often caused by a bad hard drive that is beginning to fail. On some computers it is caused by a defective keyboard. But it can come from any set of corrupted files. Some times it is the boot.ini file

But the problem can be more complicated if your computer came with a Recovery or Restore disc instead of a Windows XP install disc. If that is the case, you are better off reformatting and reinstalling Windows after you save the data... for which you will require a separate disc.
Using a regular Windows XP dis, you boot to the disc, then press the R for repair to enter the repair or recovery console.
Select the operating system, then enter your admin password.
Type: Expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\Windows\System32.
You should get a prompt asking you if you want to Overwrite the File.
You should enter Y for yes, the press <ENTER> to Overwrite.
If that works, you are probably home free.
To know for sure, shut down the computer, then run a cold boot with the <Start> button.
If it starts, correctly, then you are done.

Spero-T thanks for the info but i cant use the keyboard to enter the R to go to recovery mode i have tried three keyboards on their computer.
Then tested them on mine and they work.
I even tried to connect the keyboard via usb and they still dont work.
So i cant perform any tasks with the keyboard.
I don't know what to do.
Hope you can help me.

I'll bet couple of bucks, that your HD will work with another computer. I suspect, your MB went bad.
Was your original keyboard USB, because if not, it won't work, if it's not enabled in BIOS.
