windows media player wont recognize cd/dvd writer
    « on: October 12, 2007, 02:20:02 PM »
hi i was recently trying to burn a music cd but then i realized that windows media player 11 does not recognize my cd writer. i looked all over the web and i found out that my cd writer may not be fully compatible with vista (according to the vista compatibility list). they also said that if it was compatible, i should see a "recording" tab on the properties on the drive, and apparently i dont have that.

so what do i do? am i going to be forced to buy a new cd writer? is there a patch or something that i can download to make my drive compatible?

    thanks in advance

The problem may be with WMP itself...CD/DVD drives should not need drivers for anything after XP...
DLoad and install CDBurner XPPro...for free and see if that suits your needs.

I don't use WMP for burning, but if I understand correctly from here (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/51a88740-abda-4144-9176-cec79cca31e81033.mspx#ETBAC), you have to create playlist first:
Check that the burner is connected to your computer. If it is connected, and you haven't yet created a list of files to burn, simply exit and then restart the Player. Once you do so, the Player should recognize your USB burner. If you had created a list of files to burn, you can save the list before exiting the Player by doing the following:

    1.

Click the List button at the top of the List pane, and then click Save Playlist As.
    2.

Type a name for the list, and then click Save.
    3.

Exit and then restart the Player.
    4.

Click the Burn tab. If you have multiple CD burners, click the arrow below the Burn tab, and then click your USB burner.
    5.

In the Navigation pane, click Playlists, and then drag the list you had saved to the List pane.
    6.

    Click Start Burn.

      to patio:

cool looks like a great tool to use, thanks. do you by any chance know how i can transfer or open up my media player playlists so that i can just drag and drop? because the way im currently doing it is that i have to transfer my entire playlist to the burning section and remove things i dont want to burn, and thats a lot.

      to broni:

well i used to burn cds with media player when i was still on xp and it worked fine.

yes i have made a playlist and made a burn list from them but it keeps telling me to connect a burner and restart the player. so as of right now i cant burn anything.

i guess i will try to burn something using cdburnerxp and i hope it works

well just tried cdburnerxp and it worked fine. but i had an issue about the program freezing when i wanted burn this one song, but when i took it out of the burn list, it was fine.

well thanks to patio for this program, now i can burn cds finally :)

but if anyone else has an idea why windows media player wont recognize my drive as a recording one, please give me suggestions. i am still used to media player so i would still rather use that program.

        thanks again

Maybe something obvious, but WMP won't recognize your drive, unless blank CD is in.
Trying another CD brand, would be worth to try, also

Isn't there also an obscure setting in XP where you have to click the CD drive and select "enable recording with this device" ? ?
I am not at my XP machine right now so anyone else please chime in.

to broni: wouldnt it just tell me to insert a disk?

to patio: yeah i read in the microsoft knowledge base or something that i need right click the cd drive, go to properties, and go to the recording tab, and enable recording with this device.

but unfortunately i dont have that option on mine because maybe my cd drive is not vista compatible/certified or something.

anyone know a work-around for that issue? (that doesnt involve buying a new drive?)

          thanks

OK...here is, how it works in my WMP...
I open WMP (no CD/DVD), my DVD burner is not listed.
I put CD in, my burner is not listed.
I create playlist, and click "Burn". Only THEN my burner is listed, and burning process starts.
              Kinda stupid to me...

yeah im aware of how wmp works when burning cuz i used wmp to burn cds while i was in windows xp

but now that im in vista, i do the same exact things, but it just wont let me burn.

i click the burn tab on the top of WMP11 and the burn list opens up on the right

i drag the songs over to the burn list to the right

i pop in a cd and it should read it the cd and then the button at the bottom right that says start burn should light up, but it doesnt.

and then at the top right it tells me connect a burner and restart the player.

so yeah but the cdburnerxp works, so i dont know.

hey can u check if you have the record tab when you check your cd drive properties that allows you to "enable recording with this device" just like what patio was saying? because i think thats what im missing, i dont have that option

                thanks for your time dude

It may be something about CD brand.
As for other question, let me check...
