CD Driver is not recognized

every time i put a cd in my computer, my comp says YOU NEED A CD DIVE TO PLAY CD'S. so i checked it out in device manager, and the drive is there. and there is no better upgrade available on the net.. so how can i get my computer to recognize my dvd/cd-rom driver?

It didnt do anything for vista. Is there anyway to uninstall vista, and install XP? and if i did that, would my cd drive read again???

Check, if you have DMA enabled...

DMA was enabled on both of them. so i turned them off. then enabled them again. and still got nothing.

What do you have listed in Device Manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers?

Try updating drivers for both of them. If Intel site says, they are up to date, do it anyway. Uninstall current drivers, and install fresh ones.

ok, i uninstalled them, but how do i install new ones?

First of all, restart your computer, and see if Windows will find correct drivers...

i restarted the computer, and it tried installing a new driver, but it failed and said to get ahold of the company that made it or whatever to trouble shoot it...   so if i delete vista, can i put xp on my computer?

Do you have Windows XP CD?

Neither XP nor Vista should need drivers for a CDRom or a burner.
Try that drive in another machine to make sure it isn't the problem.
I would also try another IDE cable...
